Knowledge or practical wisdom gained from what one has observed, encountered, or undergone: a man of experience.
Experience, I have lots of, delivering projects I am passionate about. It’s like a sports replacement therapy, the challenge, the experience and the (hopefully) successful outcome. Sprint or marathon, what’s not to like!
Everyone wants to be a champion in what they do – surely?
So why is it then, that even now, builders and construction ‘professionals’ still top the polls for failing to deliver?
Why do most people, when asked, hate the experience of having to deal with this industry, the continued misery of having to accept poor service, shoddy workmanship and cost overruns.
Building homes and managing the process is probably once of the oldest skills known to man, and still we get it so badly wrong. Project Management is a simple process in reality. It’s a series of defined tasks, common sense and careful attention to detail. The PM is your guide, part coach and voice of reason during the entire process. With a good all round knowledge and experience of the industry, able to steer you and the contracting team to a successful outcome.
In my experience the most successful projects are completed in an atmosphere of honesty and transparency and with everyone involved being treated as a member of one team working to one plan.
Unfortunately, there’s a whole industry of experts, property developers and TV shows that make the point of needing a project manager, but never explaining why and where the value is. My aim is to make that case.
‘You get what you pay for’ I was once told, and that seems true most of the time nowadays, but you can get satisfaction and enjoyment from your project by setting it up properly. Low price is good, but poor quality and ‘night tremors’ is not!
My ethos? Client first. It’s their money, not mine.
I take time to set the scene and storyboard the experience ahead. Finding the right people to join the team (at the right price) is key to my philosophy. Keeping the experience simple, treating the people involved with integrity and sometimes saying ‘no’ to those persons and organisations who do not share your values. This is important to me; I do not enjoy being tarnished by others mistakes.
